The Witcher 3 Dev Talks About “Downgrade-ation”: “Very unfair to compare trailers and gameplay demos”

YouTube's fellow member 'docm77′ has posted a new video in which CD Projekt's visual creative person, Jose Teixeira, shares his thoughts on The Witcher 3's "downgrade-ation" subject.

"No nosotros didn't downgrade, information technology'south… no we didn't downgrade. Considering it'due south impossible to downgrade a game that didn't be before or wasn't playable before.

Really in that location was a guy that commented like that, you tin't downgrade something that… in that location was no grade to downgrade. He was comparing concluding product to something that wasn't playable.

At that place's 2 things that people have to separate. Downgrade is… Optimization is necessary to make the game run. Downgrade is if yous deliberately make the game worse, for whatever reason. That's totally non what happened.

As well at that place's another thing that people have to sympathize is that it'southward very unfair to compare trailers and gameplay demos. Trailer is.. trailer is a cute shot. Trailer is prepared, yous take 1 location, yous put the perfect lights, and the perfect camera bending, and the perfect scene, and it looks absolutely beautiful. It's captured in super high-definition and then you postprocess information technology. It'southward a trailer.

But a gameplay demo, that's when you encounter the real game. That'due south when you see what the existent game looks like."

CD Projekt RED explains that the 2022 gameplay demo featured an old shader system, which wasn't physically based. Some things appeared sharper. Later on implementing the whole shader system with the new PBR, the results were better.

"In 2022 we had a gameplay demo, shortly after that demo we completely… If y'all look graphics in that demo we used an erstwhile shader organization, it wasn't this physically based shader system. Information technology was a little bit flatter. Some things were sharper, as well sharp even. There was this sharpening filter that was too difficult on the eyes. So we inverse the whole shader system and put in this PBR arrangement. And it just kept getting nicer and nicer."
